Hands on with Vintage Equipment
One of the highlights of demonstrating the latest in digital filmmaking technology, is bringing in vintage and still quite functional but antiquated film cameras that demonstrates how the latest cameras still owe a great deal to this older technology.
Many of the younger students just cannot get their heads around that at one time in the far and away past (5-7 years) a camera operator had to thread a celluloid based strip of plastic through a heavy block of iron to capture images.
Jennifer,
Once you have found some antique equipment I know this is going to be a fun unit to teach.

That is such an awesome way to teach the history of a subject, I teach surgical technology and this would a fun thing to do for a day, I'll have to start checking antique stores for this, thanks for the idea!
Joseph,
This is where the saying long past but short history comes into play. Our concept of history may be different than our students because when you start talking about 5-7 years ago being history (use of certain types of equipment) to me that is yesterday and to them that is soooooooooo long ago. I think the use of these vintage devices as learning tools is a great way to get students to value what they are learning today.
