new students

what is most important when meeting a student for the first time?

Jennifer,
Acceptance is essential if students are going to become part of the learning community. Older students frequently have a lot of fear when it comes to starting a new course. They need support and early success in the class so they can see that they can and will be successful if they put forth the needed effort.

New students need to feel comfortable and welcomed. Most new students feelings anxious and stressed especially on day one. So I strongly believe that instructor have to create an environment that is not intimidating nor overwhelming for new students.

Daryl,
Before and after class. I am always early to class and I greet the students as they come in. I make it a point to ask a couple of questions about something outside of class as I interact with my more shy students. It doesn't take very many class sessions until we start to develop rapport and then I am able to call upon such students and they will be comfortable in responding.

What is the most opportune method and time to develop a rapport with a student who is a bit reserved or anti-social?

Mark,
Good way to welcome new students into your class. By displaying the human side you are saying to them that they do matter and you want to help them to be successful if they will put forth the needed effort.

I would say that letting the student feel and know that you are their to help and teach them. and model what your expectations are by example.

Lacy,
This is the human factor in teaching and it is an important one. This is how the development of rapport begins.

I think it is important to let the students get to know you as an instructor and as an individual. Discuss my past experiences as well as theirs and help them feel free to speak and make it clear that they can ask questions at any time.

Tierra,
This is an important survey to take because it gives you insight into how to customize your instruction for the upcoming class sessions. The more you know about your students the easier it is to target their learning needs.

I agree that understanding a students expectations are important. I always talk to my students the first day of class and find out exactly what they are looking for in the course to make sure that I meet their needs to the best of my ability.

Asking them what their expectations for the course are can help establish that their expectations are considered

Finding out what their expectations are from the course & the program

John,
Recognition of students as individuals and valued members of the class. This is how respect is earned and rapport developed.
