Keeping Students Focus

Students are tried at the end of a day, providing students with hands on activities will engage them and keep them focus.

Judd,
The more you know about students the better. Knowing their reason for being in the course helps you to know how to approach the student and then provide support for course success.

Each studnet is taking a course for a reason and if the instructor can figure out the reason and somehow tap the intrest of the student he or she will be more focused. The course maybe required but they still have a reason for being their. And we as instructors need to tap into that reason.

Sonya,
These longer classes are a challenge but with the methods you are using I am sure you are keeping your students engaged during the long class sessions.

Four hours of class is difficult no matter what time they happen. I try to mix things up and keep the student physically moving around in the classroom. Sometimes when all else fails I will do an ice breaker just to get blood pumping in their veins and then move back in to whatever activity we were engaging in.

Beverly,
Good way to "read" your students and be flexible in your delivery. Being an evening instructor myself I can relate to the need to mix things up to keep my tired students with me throughout the class session.

I also teach in the evening, so what I do when I see them fading is change the exercise. If I'm lecturing I will rape it up as soon as possible and either switch to lab or play an interactive game.

Carmen,
All good examples of offering instructional variety to your students. You are offering content to your students in ways that will appeal to the different learning preferences that your students bring to class.

I think that you can keep the students focus by making your lecture interesting and having the students interact. You can also have a couple of students give a group review to the class about a chapter and have the class participate in an active discussion.

Arisa,
I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I can appreciate your comments about the need for activities. I do a lot of activities to get the blood flowing and the brain working. Takes a lot of planning and effort but it pays off with the learning that my students experience.
