Long classes and clinics

I teach at an accelerated program so we have long class times. Our classes run 3-4 hours. It was interesting to learn that the average attention span for an adult was 15-18 minutes. I will pay attention to that when we have long class times and take some of your advice on the mini lectures. Thanks!

This is very important to know and can help us all as teachers.

Thanks

Cary,
This is a good way to offer change of pace and variety in your instructional delivery. I am sure that this keeps your students engaged and focused for the duration of each class session.

I design my course like a sandwich. Give 5-10 brief instruction or lecture. Then divide students into group work or independent work for 30-45 minutes. Then have a whole class discussion or small lecture, before transitioning into the next activity.

Michael,
Good way to break up the flow of the class and give students a chance to reset their brains.

I usually take Q&A every 30 minutes and a break every hour.

Lori,
I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I can relate to your comments. By offering a variety of activities after a mini-lecture I am able to keep the interest of the students and maintain a supportive learning environment. I wish you much success with your methods of maintain student engagement over the duration of longer classes.
