classroom dilemma
The class I am currently teaching is of 5 hr duration. I use to have problems regarding student engagement. I am fully aware of the attention span of an individual. However, I try to navigate around this by doing mini-lectures. Afterwards, we will discuss a case study pertaining to the topic which is very much an interactive exercise. I find it to be working much better this way.
Kelly,
I follow this same format as I teach from 4 until 10 pm. With longer duration classes we have to do a lot of planning and offer a lot of variety if we are to keep our students focused for the duration of the sessions.

I sometimes find that even a 2-2 1/2 hour class is too much. I try to break down my lectures and include questions and answers, case studies, real time examples and other distractions yet appropriate materials to help keep the attention and teach the lesson but also help pass the time.
Theresa,
Great to hear. I wish you much teaching success.

Thanks for the information, helpful
These methods would also facilitate the various learning styles. Great idea!
Martin,
Without variety and change of pace the students will zone out and their learning time will not be well spent. You are right about the need to have sufficient activities to keep them on the learning pathway needed in the course.

Sharika,
This is the format I use and I agree with you about how it keeps students engaged and focused.

I've had a similar experience with 5 hour classes as well. I find that a variety of engagement and delivery methods makes best use of the time.
I do the same. Mini lectures, discussion sessions, and I use as much hands on as possible. I feel a mixture of all keeps the students engaged and focused.
Eirzaad,
I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I can relate to long class sessions. Your strategy of using mini-lectures is a good one because that is how you are going to be able to keep their attention. I use a lot of activities as well to reinforce the content that is being taught. The result is a group of students that enjoy coming to class even if it is in the evening and they have worked all day.
