Learning Styles

Students are not always aware of their dominate learning style.
Consider conducting a learning style self-assessment of students.
Initiate class discussion of learning style differences.
For group-work assignments, ensure that each group include a diversity of learning styles so students can help each other learn.
This will help students see the class members as a self-help, cohesive learning community.

MacDameon,
This is why offering content in several different formats enables students to use their different learning preferences. The more choices they have to learn material the more engagement there will be as they progress through the course.

This is a awesome way of allowing the students to participate at a greater level. Recently me and a few staff attended a (CEA) Career Alliance Educators Seminar in KC. Before knowing the three learning styles I relied solely on Visual, upon review I happen to balance across the board to be a Visual/Kinesitic/Auditorial learner it built a great level of confidence knowing im capable of learning in different styles.

This sounds GREAT!Definetly I will be using this for my next class. Thank you!

This is something I will immediately incorporate into my classroom/lecture classes. Thanks!

Thanks, Gary.
Much appreciated.

Oh, you're just saying that because ... it's true! LoL
Thank you.

David,
Spoken like the educator you are. After all your years in teaching you have a perspective that lets you zero in on the needs to students and help them be successful if they are willing to invest the needed effort. I also you the circular arrangement for seating for the reasons you list. It helps to ramp up the class and get everyone exchanging information and insights.

David,
Sounds like a wonderful arrangement where you get to share your knowledge and expertise but on a schedule that lets you enjoy the really important things in life, such as your grandchildren.

Yes, I sure do.
However, it's refreshing to re-assign students to new groups in order to keep things interesting, allowing new group members to get acquainted.
The new groups have the same mix of learning styles, just like the previous groups.
Isn't it strange that the classroom seating arrangement (chairs in rows all facing to the front of the class) has not changed in the past 200 hundred years?
I make an effort to arrange the seating in a circular fashion, no matter what we are doing … lecture, discussion, etc because the circular arrangement immediately raises the classroom energy-level and students start inter-actioning with one another.

Thank you, Morning Star.
Much appreciated.
I've been a professor since 1982 after I graduated from the University of Michigan … Go Blue !!!!!

Retired from full-time work last April 2013, and now teach part-time so I can spend lots of time with my four grandchildren.

All the best,

That is truly a great idea!

That is a fantastic idea! Do you maintain these groups of different learning styles throughout the course?
