anonymously polling the class
does anyone have thoughts regarding the exercise of anonymously polling the class as to what they found helpful during last session vs what could be done to better help them understand during the last session ? part of me says this projects a sense of caring to them , then the other part of me says this may dangerously project a sense of uncertainty to them . welcome your thoughts .
Tamra,
This feedback will be of much value to you as you expand your expertise and grow as an educator.

I am a first time Instructor and would really benefit from this method of feed back. Thank You!
Benjamin,
Good strategy to check for understanding. Thank you for sharing this technique with us. I know it will be of help to other instructors.

This is one of my favorite formative assessments. You can do a simple question like "What did you most understand from the last class?" Then ask "What did you least understand from the last class?" If the majority answer the 2nd question the same, it's probably time to slow down and review some possibly unclear information.
James,
I give my students 3X5 cards and have them respond to three items. Three things they learned from the project/test/activity. Two questions they have that they did not get answered during the project/test/activity. One surprise that they go from completing the project/test/activity. I call it the 3-2-1 exercise. Then I have them write a couple of paragraphs on the back side of the card giving candid feedback. The don't sign the cards so they have the freedom to write what they want. I have always gotten good feedback from them and have never received nasty feedback so they take the exercise seriously. I collect the cards and then combine the responses and make sure I answer the questions raised. You might want to give this method a try and see how it works for you and your students.
