Students must recognize your familiarity and expertise with the topic, and in turn expect the "ownership" of an assigned topic from the student when they are asked to present.

I agree; this is why I try to incorporate several different teaching strategies into my lesson plans; one that involves tactile manipulation, one that involves class discussion and reflection, that that involves lectures with power points and one that challenges the class to apply their knowledge to real - life situations.

You make a key point that many students seem to miss. They need to starting owning the course content as they hear it and then internalize it as a part of their career preparation. The course is only as valuable as they make it. The more examples that can be shared along with experiences from the field the more they will start to see that they are learning information and skills that are moving them closer to achieving their career goals.
