Teaching adults

i have a hard time dealing with discipline issues in adults because other people pay money to learn

CHRISTOPHER,
I frequently use contracts with challenging students so that they and I know exactly what they need to do in order to be successful in the class and in some cases even remain in the class. I use a contract also so I can document my attempts at providing support and reinforcement to the students should a question arise at a later date.

great idea with the creating of a contract, I have "adult" students who sometimes don't act their age.....

Jeffrey,
This is why I make it clear that no one student has the right to disrupt the learning of others. When I have a problem like this I talk with the students and ask for their behavior to change. If it does, case closed. If it doesn't then I set up a contract with the student that gives him or her the conditions for remaining in the class. If the student does not conform then I remove the student from the class. By doing so I illustrate the value I place on those students that want to be there and care about creating a future for themselves.
