In our industry we have a very diverse group of learners, I try to present the compentency they need to learn by a visual demo with hands on cooperation from the students during demo time, and with handouts and sometimes with powerpoint presentations that show examples of the end product. This gives them something to goal to and with the hands on demo they get to help and show techniques they have learned and take that back to the table to share with their classmates.
The key to successful teaching is delivering the material in a way that best enables the student to understand and retain the new material given to him/her. Knowing the learning styles of your students enables you to increase your chances of successfully delivering your material
I can taylor my class to the different styles of learners and make it much more interesting...
Hi Susan,
I agree with many of the comments posted. It was really through my own learning issues that I became sensitive to the needs of others, and realized that my explanations of the material are not always best for others.
I agree with this, that it helps develop the relationship, as the students feel I am on their side, fair and interested in them
By identifing each students learning style I feel Ican develop a better reationship with them. I recently tried a new group activity by teaming up different learning stlye per group to observe communication and productivity. The students were really helpful making sure each of there group members understood what was expected of them. It also help me identify the students who needed extra guidence and understanding of the class.
As an instructor it is imperative to know the learning style of each student. With the knowledge true learning can and will take place. Understanding the individual students learning style is also the cornerstone of trust which was learned in previous modules.
Hi Patricia- Welcome to ED 103! If your class is accelerated the best tactic is to try to use as many delivery styles as possible in each lesson.Best wishes! Susan
Susan,
I am very interested in working on this area of my teaching. I am an academic instructor who has to teach a science class in a very brief time to students that often have learning deficits and short attention spans.
I thinktha tinterest is onr big benefit of knowing students learnign styles and also indirectly retention in your class.
I think this maybe a factor in moving you from a good instuctor to a great instructor if you can determine and capitalize on the class and its combined learning styles.
It can help to organize the content of the class and to choose the different delivery methods
The benefits to know ing the learning styles of my students is that I will know how to help my students better understand that information that I am trying to teach.
thanks ,great info .I will keep this thought near.
Hi Michael - I never heard that expression before - love it! Thanks for sharing- Susan
Yes I agree. I have many different styles of learners in my class.
If you know the learning styles of your students, you can reach more of them more often. I once heard: "The best instructors only ever reach about 80% of their class every day, but they reach a different 80% every day".
great point-an effective instructor has effective students
I feel that you need to adapt your teaching methods to the student learning style. Many students have multiple ways in which they learn, so using a variety of tactics would work best.
Knowing your student's learning style can help you focus on certain areas of your class room. This knowledge can make you a more effective instructor by using that information when planning your lesson plan.
I feel that the instructional benifits of knowing the learning styles of your students is crucial to the success of the student. If you leave a student out, or do not take the time to reach a student who does not understand due to have a different learning style, then you are missing the whole point as a teacher in general.
By knowing the learning styles of my students I am able to vary my presentation of material to make sure all students are given the chance to successfully learn. If more of my students learn/retain the material it reinforces my effectiveness.
