Tools for teaching.

The benefits for completing this course are to long to list here.Cant wait to apply the strategies learned throughout the new year.

I agree with you. I look back on how things were when I was in school, I really could have learned alot more. These techniques would have helped me very much. I am thankful for this program. I want my students to have all the resourses available so they could learn as much as they can.

I think that thies has helped me understand the ways that i learn things, as well to help students in the way that they can learn.

Thank you, Susan,

I'll think about how I can incorporate these ideas into my classes.

Here are some "hands-on" ideas for you Judy.

Hands-On Experience
Active learning is an important part of the program at UNC Asheville. Students learn many of the principles, concepts and methods of Sociology and Anthropology by carrying out research projects on campus and in the larger community. Many courses integrate a service learning component in which students test out concepts and ideas in a “real-world” setting while providing for the needs of specific organizations in the Asheville area. Sociology majors may intern at an institution in the Asheville area (local hospitals, rape crisis centers, social work agencies, migrant workers’ associations, and probation and parole offices, for example).

From Lewis University-
Examples of past applied sociology projects undertaken at
Lewis cover research for faculty/staff, service projects, and
“positive change” oriented research. For example, students
used survey research to determine student interest/support
for a women’s studies course and possible minor at Lewis.
The project resulted in the development of a new course
called Introduction to Women’s Studies, and a proposal for
the women’s studies minor.
For a service project, a team of Lewis sociology students
volunteered as tutors and mentors with the Big Brother/Big
Sisters program. The team interviewed the director and
surveyed other tutors to gather ideas on how to improve
the program. Students gained experience from the handson
mentoring and tutoring aspect, and provided
suggestions that were appreciated by the organization

I agree with you Victor. When we incorporate all of the learning styles in our teaching methods, there is a higher probability of reaching more students. In my sociology class, I utilize the text (written), I show Powerpoint presentations (visual), and I facilitate active class discussions (auditory). I need to work on kinesthetic. Any ideas?

It's amazing now looking back on my years as a student how much more I could have learned.I think this program is a very effective tool in any learning environment.

always try to reach the student in all learning catagories to achieve there highest learning experiances in class and lab

knowing students learning styles is critically because it allows use as teachers to reach each student!
