Levels of learning and delivery
I am a firm believer that delivery of info is directed by the level of learning and how advanced it is.
entry level learning - for foundation - is best as discussion.
synthesis - is best delivered as a kinestetic process with little directive.
One of our biggest issues is with students not at the level of the class. More advanced classes are usually taught hands on, however the students sometimes do not have the foundation to be successful. It is unfortunate that we are delivered with students with false understandings of their capablilities.
In a classroom with students of mixed ability it is always a balancing act.
I agree it is important to address each learning style.
How that is done can depend on the course objectives and the actual mix of students.
So there is always a measure of trial and error, adjustment and experimentation required.
And some review of fundamentals is always helpful for each class.
Is it possible that the individual learning styles may not necessarily attribute to an individual's potential abilities for the task they are trying to learn.
I am sorry but I do not believe that anyone is naturally able to do anything. People are by there upbringings more favored to certain tasks than others.
This does not mean they can't do something, it just means that they may need extraordinary education to develop the abilities.
Hi Scott-welcome to ED 103! I understand your point but still think it's important to try to address each learning style regardless of the education discipline. In a business program for example, students can form teams to develop marketing plans or have the students take field trips to businesses.
Hi Scott
I totally agree with you. My student always complain that when am I going to use this math. I always have to explain to them which is very frustrating to me.
We talk about different delivery styles but we also have to look at 2 things:
1) What type of education, meaning a fashion major and art major and graphics major is completely different from a business major, accounting major. Some are more hands on and some are more book orientated.
2) We have to look at this past generation and there habits and how they behave, this will help us understand the future students that are coming to school.
Hi Scott - this is a perennial problem especially with schools that have open enrollment. Having remediation programs in place to help these underprepared students is the best answer we have found.
Scott, we as an instructor should look at all the levels to help us understand the student because students are different.
