Learning Styles

I like varying the styles to catch every student's interest. I am currently teaching Cost Control and I split up the class time between lectures with power point presentation, seat work, work experience sharing and board work. This way, I am able to gauge the student's grasp of the subject matter and am able to identify who I need to do one-on-one work with.

Hi Don - Welcome to ED 103! Since I know absolutely nothing about electricity, I am in awe about the complexity of your discipline and also the necessity of the students fully grasping the concepts (that stuff can be dangerous!!!)From your description, you are addressing all the learning styles in your lessons - great work! Best wishes - Susan

I teach an automotive electrical course. The difficulties that i run into when teaching electrical diagnostics is that the students do not see the electricity moving through a wire. They can only see the effects of it such as a window rolling up or a fan turning on. I have to teach them that their electrical diagnostic meter will be their eyes when seeing the voltage, amperage or resistance in a circuit. When dealing with differant learning styles, I have to use a whole tool box of ideas in order to get the course concept across. Tools such as a powerpoint, working training boards, internet websites, classroom pass arounds, instructor led demonstrations and so on. After the first few days of the course,I can usually dtermine the majority of learning styles that are in my class.

I totally agree with you this is the best way to gauge if the student is getting what you are teaching.

I strongly believe in changing the teaching styles while in the classroom. This helps the students stayed engaged in the topic and also offers every student a chance to grasp the information by which teaching method they prefer.

I imagine the variety you present in your classroom also keeps your students engaged. Great stuff.

Hi Lina,
I really like your approach on teaching Cost Control and the variety of ways that you approach the class. I am dyslexic myself, and I would grasp information very well in that learning environment. Keep up the fantastic teaching!

HI Lina- Welcome to Ed 103! You are doing a great job of varying your delivery to accomodate the learning styles of your students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
