Is there any way to assess a students prefered learning style before they start a program. Often times a student is 1/3 of the way or more through school before their stlye is identified. It would be great if there was somethig to identify their style upon admission to school...
I agree, hand on very important for students give them more visual, kinesthetic and knowledge.
But, supposing the school at which we are working conducts no such assessment (or, if they do, do not share its findings with instructors), how can an instructor go about making such assessments on his own? I am not a learning theorist, so I would be hesitant to attempt to develop my own learning-styles assessment tool, and would be deeply suspicious of the results thereof.
Are there online resources available?
Myself, I am always dubious on people's self-assessments; in matters or learning style as well as personality style (eg Meyers-Briggs), I've long thought people's self-assessments to be more rooted in wishful thinking than in actual self-awareness.
Hi Kevin - You make a great point - the earlier we can identify learning styles, the better. Some schools do learning style inventories at orientation. Some ask students about their preferences during the admission process. best wishes- Susan
