Learning styles and choice of a career
Do students 'self-select' areas of study/careers that employ their main learning style? For instance, I teach in the Fashion Design area. I assume that few students are auditory learners while most are visual learners. Does anyone find that to be true in thier experience?
Hi Linda- Thanks for your post to the forum! Diversity in our classrooms is always a challenge but almost always a gurantee! For your hands on learners in A & P how about some demos - Do you have an anatomical model? Can you manage to wrangle some animal body parts from a local butcher? ( I have a farm so I provide heart, livers, eye balls etc. for my A & P instructors!)Use your imagination and come up with some ways for your kinesthetic folks to get the hands on that they need. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career and happy New Year! SusanUse
Hi Linda- You may well have a student with a learning disability or one who has outside issues (job, family) that are preventing them from studying. Best wishes! Susan
I teach in a medical forum, Antamony and Physiology. Though my students are assesed and tested before entering the program there are still diverse learners in every class I teach. However, if I only lectured and did not write on the board or use visuals I would lose 100% of my class. So I agree that the majority in some way are visual learners. For the hands on students my class is required to take notes. My question is this. If you still have a student that test low and have even offered one-on-one what am I missing?
I think students do select careers according to their preferred learning style. I teach culinary arts and I find more then 3/4s of my students are tactile and visual learners.
