Engaging the student

Students should not be limited to one learning style. Students need to learn how to adapt. Instructors must empower students to step out of their comfort zone.

Hi Jennifer - you are certainly making a great effort to reach all the learning styles! Susan

I agree. I use powerpoints in my class. This can be a drag for students who are hands on, so I bring extra items into my class to go along with the powerpoint to enhance their learning. Also, I have auditory clips to go along with the powerpoints. I try to incorporate all of the learning styles.

I agree, but as an online instructor, I'm not sure how to do that. Online courses are mostly reading, and independant study. How can I incorporate some of these other methods in online?

I absolutely agree! Many of my students love to move and engage with one another. With this fact in mind I had them engage in a role playing activity. Some students loved it and others disliked it, but I reminded them it's okay to be uncomfortable and that it's often a sign of growth.

Hi David - that's it in a nutshell! Thanks for your post. Best wishes - Susan

As instructors we also need to learn to adapt. Try to use as many different learning styles as possible in each class we teach. Because our goal is to see that every student is successful in the career they have chosen.

I do think that it is important to use a variety of teaching styles so that you can bring out the best in each of your students.

Hi Mark - Thanks for your post to the forum. I always say that the best strategy is to try to use as many delivery techniques as possible in every class. You cannot realistically address every style in every class, but making an effort on a regular basis pays off. Best wishes - Susan

I agree that students should not be limited, or that we shouldn't cater to a particular style for a particular student.

Still. we must use student's strengths to help them achieve, regardless of whether that means using a style of teaching that better helps the student learn the desired material. In doing so, we may help the student develop new learning abilities.
