Learning Styles in the Online Classroom

As I was going through the material in module 1 I kept thinking: "What can I do for my online student?" It seems that in the on-ground classes it's more straightforward to identify the student's learning style and implement the appropriate teaching strategies. In the online setting, it's a little trickier. However, I try to provide various learning avenues to help my students: from interactive tutorials, to discussions, to group work. What have you found useful in addressing the learning styles of the online student?

Hi Susan,

I teach introduction to sociology.

Thanks!

Hi Tracesea - What do you teach? I will try to get some ideas for you. Best wishes! - Susan

I was going to ask the same thing, but it doesn't seem that anyone else has responded to your question. In my online school the tasks are all predefined, so I have no control over them. I can't think of any way that I could engage kinesthetic learners. I do powerpoints and lectures, and the students do have a textbook, so I guess that covers at least some of the learning styles. I'm just not sure how I would do a learning style assessment and apply the results in my classroom. Students are not even required to attend my live chats, so I have little to no interaction with some of them.
