Small Class Sizes
I think the small class sizes we have where I teach allows for more variety in delivery methods and assessments. What types of things have worked with larger classes (30-100 students)? Sarah Foslien
Hi Nathan - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree, in larger classes group work can be very useful, especially if you assign the groups so thet there are some stronger students who can mentor some who may be struggling a bit. Of course it's essential that we keep track of how everyone is progressing as well! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
For larger classes, group activities and in class work assignments are very helpful.
Hi Leslie- Thanks for your post to the forum. In large groups it can be difficult to assess application assessments as we only have one set of eyes! Do you have any suggestions on how to observe students in large groups? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I teach large groups that are one on one and I have noticed that students learn quicker through actualo practical work. Saying and demonstrating the assignment requirement is one thing but seeing students solve the problems is satisfying and allows me to concentrate on the weaker students
Majority of the classes I teach are "hands on". I try to break up the course to include all of the learning styles. I assign individual projects as well as group activities, some lecture and powerpoint. I realize it will be impossible to make everyone happy all the time, but I will do the best I can!
I would agree with the idea of using all four modes. Even student who may prefer one mode will get bored if the entire course or lesson is taught using that mode. IMHO.
Sarah,
I'm newer to teaching, however during my training with my new employer they hammered the fact that we should ALWAYS teach to all 4 learning styles. The preclass prep is crutial to make sure you can keep all your students learning styles engaged as much as possible.
Sarah, I break large groups down when I consult using some form of whole group technology or systems dynamics. Basically the idea is to create small groups within the larger group. I then have each group summarize or report out. Have done groups as large as 300 people with and it has worked well with the right facilities and equipment.
