Mixing the various learning methods

For my classes, I try to bring in a variety of learning methods. Not only does it expose the various methods to the students, but it hits on students' preferences. I also design a lot of my classwork to be involved in each of the methods so that students get a fair mixture of all the styles.

I agree also I try to include some instruction in every learning style in every lecture.

I've taken a number of courses where the instructor teaches in the style that he/she prefers learning paying no regard to the learning styles of the students. I've even seen it in a career college where I taught previously. These pitfalls short-change the students potential for learning.

Hi David- Thanks for your post to the forum. I make sure that I discuss learning styles with my students at the start of my course. I tell them that in my classes we will all be exposed to all the styles and that they may very well find some new ways to learn. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I find that alot of students arrive with the idea that they only learn in one particular way (I'm a hands on person, I can't learn from a book, etc)

Using a variety of techniques in the classroom can break this misconception and open them to a wider view of their own abilities

And this method supports the assessment formula: multiple types over time. This also applies to instruction.

I agree. Mixing it up not only helps the student. Instructors can get stagnant teaching the same courses the same way.
