Learning styles

I like to ask the students the first day of class what helps them learn?
This way I get a heads up on what kind of teaching to focus on

Hi Kris- Thanks for your post to the forum. in addition to giving you some gidance on what material to focus on, you are able to clear up misconcetions about the course objectives before the class gets going. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I also like tio ask them what their expectations of the course are so I can understand what material to focus on.

Hi Jay - Excellent way to introduce the concept of learning styles to your students. Usually they are really trilled to finally have an insight to how they learn. Best wishes- Susan

I do the same thing in my classes.
I have the students fill out a short learning styles survey online; then next class session we discuss the results and I pledge to hit all 4 learning styles in my teaching each class session. So, if they are "bored" with one of my teaching methods, they just have to patiently wait until I use their preferred style.
The students really appreciate this, the use of many teaching methods to hit on all 4 learning styles.

Hi Amanda- Thanks for your post to the forum. Asking students what helps them learn will indeed give you great insight. It also probably forces them to think about how they study and learn. - Excellent! Best wishes- Susan
