Using learning styles you are not as comfortable with.
I have found that it is a major challenge to incorporate the learning styles that I do not learn best from myself. I have a fear that students are thinking the same thing I would if I were in their shoes (which is not positive). However, after stepping outside of the box a few times it has become more and more comfortable and I have really improved how I deliver the materials in this way (as evidenced by course evals).
We need to be able to mix up our teaching styles to reach all students than we would be better instructor/teacher and obviously will benefit most of our students.
I have found that stepping out of the "box" that I'm use to, which would be lectures and written work, has helped my students significantly. I find many of my students are kinesthetic and visual learners, so I have had to rise to the challenge to not just talk but to show, demonstrate, and let them try.
Hi Maria - You are doing a great job of varying your delivery to meet the diverse learning styles of your students. Great work! Susan
I have found this to be true for myself as well. I am a visual learner so I do a lot of PowerPoints in my class. It helps me to organize my thoughts. But I have also realized that not every student learns best by PowerPoint so I have also began group discussions and projects for people that are more hands-on learners.
Hi Heidi- Thanks for your post to the forum. Congratulations for having the courage to step out of your comfort zone and vary your deivery - I agree it's not that easy! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
