ideas for teaching "hands on" learners

looking for ideas to teach medical terminology in a "hands on" way...

Gail, Thank you so much for the great idea of the ball toss for Medical Terminology. Can't wait to try this. I teach a Med Term I and II class and I am always looking for new ideas to help students learn the new language.

Hi Gail - thanks for sharing some terrific ideas for kinesthetic learners!! In Med Term those ideas are usually pretty scarce! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

Some of the things we use at SBC Cleveland in Med Term are...Throwing out a soft ball and the first student that catches it says a prefix, tosses the ball and the second person says a combining form, tosses the ball and the third person says a suffix, tosses the ball and the fourth person puts the word together and says what the word means. The students have a lot of fun with this and it really gets them to know their word parts. We also play bingo, another huge hit. We have them play a fishing game where the word parts are on pieces of card board with either a hole in them or a magnet and then the students take their fishing rods and "catch" a fish and when they catch it they say what the word part is and what it means. When the students have all their "fish" they can be put in groups and write stories using all of their word parts...then they read them to the class and as they read them the class gives the meaning of the word parts. The stories can be silly...not make sense whatever...for example the gyneco went to the -hexia Alabama...etc...Hope these help!!!

Hi Michelle- Thanks for your post to the forum. I absolutely love your colored felt idea! How creative! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Students remember hands on experiences. In order for my students to remember the layers of the abdominal wall we use different colors of felt. the skin we use tan felt, thesubsutaneous we use yellow felt, scarpas fascia we use white felt, external oblique weuse red felt, transversus abdominal minus muscle we use red felt, transversalis fascia we use white felt and pink for the peritoneum. It real works and the students retain the information.
