Teaching to Learning styles

I have enjoyed reading about the importance of teaching to different learning styles and have read so much about this topic over the past 10 years or more. I can certainly appreciate this topic as I may self have always retained more information when it is presented in a discussion and also written on the board with visuals to back it up. Students grasp and gain so much more knowledge through several means of giving information. Happy teaching... Mary Beck

Hi Karen - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes - often students do know how they learn best. If not, simple questions by the instructor or a quick online assessment can give them that information. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Sometimes it may be helpful for students to identify their preferred learning style in the first class or on a 3 X 5 notecard. This assessment may provide the instructor greater insight of method to present complex topics or content.

Also, posing class questions to the different learning style groups, may provide clearer understanding by others in the class, or better understanding to same style/different style learners.

I do the same thing of printing out handouts for notes so that the students have a visual as well as writing when they review for quizzes.

I agree. PPT are a useful tool. However, I am aware to not over use them. Too many will either bore the student or they are trying to write down to much information and get lost.

I to enjoyed refreshing myself on the different learning styles. Its been a few years but i took a few classed that really turned the light on for me about the differnt style. I know try to use many diffent style to reach more of my students. it really works.
Love to teach and turn lights on in my students head

I agree that PP are a great asset in teaching. I love the idea of using screenshots and using that cue to ask particular questions of the class. I teach a Introductory Computer class and have trouble hitting all the learning styles because it is so hands on. Any great ideas out there would be appreciated.

Teaching design classes requires that the learning style be both visual and tactile. Although some student may have different learning styles and these need to be addressed as well, teacher demonstrations followed by the student doing the example themselves seems to work best. Most are not readers and do not like to read, however reading assignments are important to encourage them to read. However the assignment must be visually supplemented

Hi Mary- Thanks for your post to the forum. Powerpoints can be very useful for viual learners when used as we lecture. I like to print out the slides as handouts so that students can take notes as they listen to the lecture and view the slides. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Power point is great for many students. It help them to stay focused and learn main ideas as you teach the important concepts to be learned. I wish that I used PP more in my teaching. M.Beck

Hi Greg- Thanks for your post to the forum. The screen shots with questions that you use to punctuate your powerpoints also serve to break up what sometimes can lead to "Death by Powerpoint"! LOL! Great work Greg! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I teach by power point. But In the power point I have screen shots that ask questions. This alows students who learn but auditory to here
answers from other students. I think this helps the information sink in.
