how do you know what type of learners you have

how can i tell what type of learners i have

Hi Patrick-Thanks for your post to the forum. I had the same experience - as a visual learner, I was overwhelming my students with video and graphics! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

After being able to learn what type of learner i am through a test that was offered at my company. It was helpful to me to know what type of learner I am. That way I did not only teach to my favorite type.

Hi Earline- Thanks for sharing some simple ways to informally assess the learning styles of students. Susan

Ican tell the different types of learners that I have by the end of the first week.I observe them during lecture, I talk with them. I sometimes use a survey on the first day of class.

One of my undergraduate courses required me to take the learning style inventory. The inventory was very helpful because it gave me a chance to think about how I was learning and how the implementation of the different learning styles academically affected me. I was able to realize my strong versus my weak learning styles. It also helped me reevaluate how I approached my study habits and how to improve them. From the students’ point of view, it is helpful because he or she can suggest their preference in approaching a project or lecture. Students should know their learning style strengths and weaknesses to help their instructor assess how they should approach their teaching methods or plan.

I have had a great response from students that have previously taken College Success. They are usually very willing to share with you their preferred learning styles.

Hi Linnie - I think that is entirely possible, especially if your students have an understanding at how they prefer to learn. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Can a person accuratly assess types of learners just by talking/asking the student?

Hi Lynne- Here is a free learning style inventory that you can use. There are many others - just "Google" - "Learning styles inventory".

Are there tests available to test learning style? It would be helpful to have these.

Hi Robin - You can assess your students in several ways: You can discuss learning styles and ask your students what style they think they are; you can observe your students ( but that can take a while); or you can have your students take a learning styles assessment. Susan
