Recognizing the various learning styles is perhaps the most important aspect of becoming a successful instructor. This module mentions asking our students what their personal learning style is at the beginning of the course. However, I find that many students are not aware of their preferred learning style and need help discovering which method they prefer. While it would be helpful to ask at the beginning of a course, I think it would be beneficial to revisit the question, asking students after you have tried various presentation methods which kinds were most helpful or effective for them. This will improve our instruction as the course progresses.
I think it is a good idea at the beginning of each orientation class you may have to take a survey and have students write down what they think their best effective way of learning material is.
Hi Justin - We can never teach to every learning style all of the time. The best strategy is to plan your lesson plans with the styles in mind and try to incorporate varied activities and delivery as much as possible. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I typically find that after a week or so of interactions with my students it is relatively easy to determine their learning style. As a result, I am able to adjust my teaching methods as needed.
A a new teacher, I struggle with meeting the learning style of each student. With a class full of various learning styles it is often hard to capture everyone's attention for extended periods of time. My assumption is that this will become easier for me to handle as I become more experienced as an instructor.
At the school one of the first classes teaches about Learning Styles and how they are multiple learning styles. The textbook gives several examples and exercises for student to identify what their learning style is.
As an instructor, I try to incorporate all types of learning styles to reach out to all my students.
Hi Lisa- Thanks for your post to the forum. I find that often students do have some idea of how they learn best, but also like to have them take a learning style assessment to confirm. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
