if we fail to learn styles

students are individuals and we must adapt to their styles inorder to reach them

Hi Jeremy, Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, often we "older" instructors are resistant to learning new ways. But, when we are coached to do so, we can really get re-invigorated! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I think it should be "any" instructors. I would think the older more burn out instructors would be the ones stuck in a groove of one style of teaching.

Absolutely. It's terrible to assume that adult learners can adjust to the instructor more easily. If anything, as they have typically developed ingrained studying and learning habits by that point, one would think it would be more difficult for them to adapt. It's much more painless for the instructor to adapt to the student, not vise-versa.

I totally agree, if we do not learn how to reach our students then we have failed as instructors.

totally agree... new instructors should be montiored and mentored on the learning styles...especially if the instructor is new to adult teaching/learning. We sometimes assume the adult learner is able to adjust to the style of the instructor...big mistake.

A new instructor should really assess which students tend to do poorly and then try to attend to their learning styles in the future. If we don;t do this then we ae putting those students at a disadvantage.
