Coverting learning styles
This is a good lesson. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for getting students who are hands on learners to memorize large amounts of information in a short time. Also, is there a way to get students who have test anxiety to remember information for a standardize test?
Hi Donna- Thanks for your post to the forum. You are quite a dynamic instructor and the result is obviously a dynamic classroom! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I encourage students to "own" the information. Memorization is not a very reliable learning method. "In today, out tomorrow". It is much more important to convert the info into a sensible form. Today we have so many tools that help with information deciphering and understanding. I tell my students to google topics or words. To really research concepts. It is easier and less time consuming than repetitive memorization. Somewhere in the process a "brain hook" will capture them and the info is in there. There are unlimited resources online. Youtube videos, student pictures and papers, instructors with great ideas for learning info. I stress not to keep re-reading the same info over and over but to keep clicking and scanning until something in their brain "clicks". Hope this idea is helpful :)
Hi Michael - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, although students can adapt to different styles, they will always learn best with their preferred style. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
To convert a person's learning style would be very difficult to do. It would be more difficult than adapting the teaching and delivery style to the student's learning style. Through coaching,a good instructor can help a student use their own learning style to an advantage.
Hi Ingrid - Our instructors who teach classes that require a lot of memorization swear by flash cards that students make themselves. Susan
