Teaching Styles VS Learning Styles

Are some students discriminated against by your teaching style? Is your teaching style biased to some learning styles?

Hi Mark, Thanks for your post to the forum. I understand your point - for me hands on is the toughest but I try to find hands on activities that I do feel comfortable with. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

We also have to use styles that are comfortable for us. I mean, we shouldn't pretend to be comfortable at a style that doesn't mesh with us. It will come across as forced, non-natural, which likewise will bore the students to tears because they will quickly perceive this.

We need to adjust but we also have to do this within the parameters of ourselves as well.

Hi Shawn, Thanks for your post to the forum. I really believe that choosing varied delivery styles as often as possible is the best way to go. It will reach all of the learning style preferences of your students as well as encouraging them to adapt to other styles. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree. I think we all have a style that fits us best, but it is important to be willing to change or try other methods -- especially if the class isn't responding to your normal methods.

I think one of the biggest challenges we have as instructors is trying to figure out what method works best with each class -- and it will change with each class we teach.

I have been teaching for a little over 5 years; I do find it easier to teach using my dominant learning style, however I do consciously try to address the other learning styles during class presentations and lectures by using various information distribution methods. (Lecture, Powerpoint presentations, hands-on in-class assignments, and reading assignments).

Hi Leo - Thanks fpor your post to the forum. Yes, reaching the diverse learning styles takes some effort but it is so worthwhile! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I always try to gear my teaching style to the learning styles of my students. I always ask questions and try to figure out each students strong and weak learning points, then I try to teach to all their styles, it takes a little more time but eventually everyone is on the same page and i have figured out a way to teach to every learning style for that class.

Hi Cynthia- Thanks for your post to the forum. It is challenging but also exciting to try new delivery styles to meet the needs of our diverse learners! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Hi Susan,

I agree it is difficult to vary from what we are use to. I am looking at this as an opportunity for myself to aquire new learning styles while helping my students. Wish me luck!!

Hi Trevor- Yes, I think we all feel more comfortable teaching in the style that we prefer, so it's a "reach" to vary our delivery style. Best wishes - Susan
