Learning disability
How to best teach a student with ADHD? There are several students with this disorder attending institutions of higher learning.
Hi Shannon, Thanks for your post to the forum. I will never forget the mock interview I did with a rather shy graduating student. When I asked her what she planned to do after graduation, she said, "I am taking my diploma to my high school to show it to my guidance counselor who told me I would never graduate from a college." I truly had tears in my eyes hearing that!

I see numberous students entering into our career college that lack the basics. Students are required to pass an entrance exam, but reading, writing, and basic math are all issues. As instructors we try to encourage and help these students to the best of our ability, providing tutoring, on and off site resources, etc...
Sadly, many of them come out of preliminary education with the thought that learning is too difficult for them.It is so rewarding to be able to work with a student and see the light bulbs going off and their confidence level improve as they realize that they can learn when the information is given to them in a way that fits their preference.
Hi Rebecca, Thanks for your post to the forum. Unfortunately, we see too many students that have problems with basic skills. The best we can do is what you mention - find them as much remedial help as possible. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I recently had a student approach me about the difficulties she has with spelling. I personally do not have the knowledge on how to help someone become a better speller. I checked into tutoring at our facility and other resources. It was receommended that she speak to our librarian-which has been very helpful to her. She also enlisted the help of a recent grad in her same program to help her out. It's always good to know that there is help out there for these students whether it comes from the instructors, the librarian or even alumni.
Generally there is an IEP that supports the students learning disability. I would recommend reviewing the IEP first.
Hi Maria, This is a very open-ended question. What majors, how functioning are they, what are their general skill levels??
