Teaching Pharmacology
Teaching pharmacology has been challenging but also enjoyable. The exercise and tutorials make a lot of sense because I find myself using multiple styles in relaying a tremendous amount of information to the students in a very short amount of time.
Between lectures, powerpoints, videos, doing hands on projects, and memorization of drugs and various mechanisms of actions on the body, I find that it not only keeps the information from becoming monotonous, but provides a lot of variety for the student and myself.
More importantly though, when it comes time for the students to take their board exams, I've had a number of them come to me after finishing and comment on the different methods they use to recall the information to answer a specific question!
I really enjoyed this exercise!

Sounds like your school gives you some freedom on what to teach and how to deliver it. The school I work for doesn't let us be creative. I also teach pharmacology and the only thing I'm allowed to use is the text book. If I find something interesting on the web I have to submit a request to have it OK'd by the PM. By the time it would get done we are learning something new.
I would love to have some freedom , so I can help more students to better themselves. The biggest complaint from students is how dry our material is. I must agree, I even get bored and I'm the teacher.
I would love to do video presentations on MOAs. The only time I can mix some teaching styles is in lab, " surprisingly " sudents do a lot better in lab than any other classes. We don't even do learning style analysis, and non of the instructors get any training . Hopefully after this course I'll be a better educator, possibly even help other instructors with their teaching .
Hi Zafar, Thanks for your post to the forum. You are obviously doing a great job of teaching to the learning styles! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
