Subject Matter -> Learning Styles

I've read a lot of posts that begin, "I teach XYZ subject, so my students are mostly of ABC learning style." I don't see the correlation. That seems to be implying that the learning preferences of an individual influence there choice of study.

Is that true?

I would hope this is the exception and not the rule. The two years of liberal arts education (schooling) expose students to a variety of subject matter. I found the discussion to be more in line with using a variety of teaching strategies (audio, visual, written and kinesthetic). By incorporating [these] different learning strategies it will prove beneficial to the entire class rather than the select view; that is, by using a single learning style, only a fraction of the students will benefit. As a result, by knowing the different learning styles of our students [and this will vary given the course content, math v. English], we, as educators, can bring the best out of our students with limited frustration and anxiety.

I teach writing. Although I've managed to develop some new learning activities on my own, I was fortunate enough to receive a faculty fellowship once that helped me design and teach an arts-integrated freshman composition course.

In addition to readings, I used paintings, digital videos, and live performances to teach students various concepts about writing and the writing process.

Prior to that course, I don't think I was doing enough to appeal to visual and kinetic learners.

Hi Nicole, Thanks for your post to the forum. I really like the idea of group problem solving! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I was actually wondering this same thing. In addition, I was wondering if others find it hard to incorporate all four of the learning styles into certain kinds of courses. I find it easier to come up with a wider variety of activities that incorporate the different kinds of methods for some classes over others.
