REFRASING THE SAME QUESTION OR EVEN BREAKING THE QUESTION DOWN INTO SEVERAL SMALL QUESTIONS I THINK IS A GREAT WAY TO GET THE STUDENTS BACK ON THE SUBJECT AS WELL.

Agreed. I teach in a technical school (Audio Engineering) and the sight of all those knobs and buttons, or the mere mention of a simple technical or physics-based concepts quite often scares them to death. I try to set them at ease by breaking concepts down into simpler ideas, while assuring them they don't need to know every last fact about (for example) the physics of air displacement, so much as an understanding of the basics. At least early on.
