Questioning Techniques

For each two hours of lecture that you facilitate, roughly how long do you use a questioning method with your students? How many of the 6 different levels of questioning do you use during that time?

All 6 levels are used starting with what they were taught yesterday then building to the assignment.

During lecture I use repetition and consistantly ask questions to all students at some point during the phase. When the students leave my class they understand the material, and they can never say they didn't learn anything.

Hi Jimmy - Welcome to ED 103! Questioning students at random will indeed keep your students on their toes and will increase the amount of preparation they will do in advance of class. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

It is important when asking the class questions to call on students randomly. This will keep the whole class interested and no one knows who will be called next.

When I do a lecture alway to tell them best way to learn take note and try to me more question.

Hi James - Thanks for a very exact answer to the question! I also like breaking up lectures with questions. It keeps the students awake and engaged. Best wishes! Susan

How often and what type of questioning is directly related the type of training and class make up. If it is a long lecture or a very complex subject, I will use a lot more questions to break it down into smaller bites. If it is training on equipment, it will be more procedural in nature and more specific.

Hi Michael - welcome to ED 103! I think that it is a good idea to hold the analysis, synthesis and evaluation type questions until the students get some more application/hands-on time. Often these questions are no longer questions at that point. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

Lately I have been teaching the introduction course for new students attending our campus. Typically I try to ask questions as I go through our information in smaller bites

Since all the information is new to the students, I tend to use knowledge, comprehension and some application questions. Since we cover a large amount of basic and theory information during the 15 days I have my students I refrain from asking Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation questions until the students have more hands on time to apply the basic and theory concepts presented.

I use repetion ,explantion ,deduction and generalization , by the time the students leave my class they understand the material.

I use all the questioning methods while i am lectureing so I keep the students involved in their education. In some of the lectures I spend more time on the material so it is more clear when i do start my Questions that i can expect good answers.

Hi John - Welcome to ED 103! You are obviously an experienced instructor and you run a classroom that engages your students through effective questioning. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan

I prefer to mix questions in with the lecture rather than have an extended Q & A period. It keeps the students engaged and helps me keep track of where they are relative to the pace of my lecture. As for the style of questions used, I mix knowledge, application and analysis most of the time. The others are interspersed as the spirit moves me. It has taken a few years to get the feel for what a particular student likes, and I have a basic pattern that I follow which I adjust as I feel the need. I also like to hand them a component and let them lecture me on it. I feel that this mix has worked / continues to work well for me.

Hi Jeff - Congratulations on taking questioning to new levels! You are really doing a terrific job at getting your students engaged and learning. Best wishes for continued success! Susan

I can not say for certain how many questions I ask in a two hour period. My lecture revolves around questions. I use this technique as an effective lecture delivery method. I feel it helps me evaluate if, the material being delivered at that time is being understood or falling on deaf ears. I find myself constantly going around the room asking questions. This also helps keep the students engaged in the material.

My entire lecture is a series of questions that continue to build upon each other leading the students to a deeper understanding of the subject matter as the lesson progresses.
I really could not begin to break it down because I tailor the levels to the understanding and interaction of every class. I like to elicit personal experiences from the students and bring those into the discussions. If one class isn't very forthcoming at first, I use subjects from past students or my self to get them thinking.
This leads to a very high energy room and at one time this caused me trouble as we could drift off subject, but I've learned how to keep the discussions on track and the students seem to even enjoy subjects that could have been very dry.

Approx a half of an hour. And I try to encorperate as many levels as possible

To help keep the Class moving with energy questioning should be used the Hole time. All the different levels of questioning should be used also.

Hi Willim - Welcome to ED 103! I really like that you mix questions into your lectures at frequent intervals. How many students miss an important idea, do not raise their hand to ask a question and so miss the entire rest of the lecture that built on that idea? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan
