Questions can lead student to the correct understanding of the concept by making them think. One of the best methods is to ask questions about the topic but in a different context. This will check the student's ability to apply what they have learned to a situation that may have slight variences.

I agree asking the student questions while reviewing the material does help the student with comprehension.
I love the fact when the class ask a variety of questions. Like you stated above it proves to me that they really do understand what I'm trying to teach. Then as a group the next day we review what we had learned the previous day and then move forward.
