Way student do not answer questions
Some student don't answer question because they feel afray that the answer is incorrect and other students look them as not potentialy efective for the corse activities
Hi Melissa-Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, as you point out, sometimes, despite our best efforts, students will just not participate. I agree also that it is often just their personalities. Still we must persist in trying to pull them all in! Best wishes- Susan
I used to think this was true but I do everything I can to build a supportive and comfortable learning environment. From day 1 until the last day of the term it seems it's the same students who love to engage and others really prefer not to do so unless by force. I view it as more of a preference for introversion or extraversion. However, this doesn't mean I won't continue to find ways to draw out more introverted personality types as they inevitably have as much to share as the extraverts.
HI Gail - Thanks for your post to the forum. You're coaching will be really valuable to your students when they move into the workplace.
Best wishes for continued success in your tdeaching career. - Susan
I tell my students to give me the answer with confidence in their voice. If it's wrong it won't be their first or last time being wrong, but at least you said your answer with confidence. Also i tell them, that since no one else is apparantly answering the question, a confident answer may generate some discussion, even if it is wrong. I always tell them 'thanks' for answering and if it is wrong try to steer the answer in the correct direction. I let them know if it is correct that they are a fast group of learners and they must have a great teacher-- it adds lots of chuckles and makes answering questions much more fun and not so 'scarry.' a fun class can be a great learning environment!!
That's probably true for a fair number of students. Confidence in one's knowledge tends to build courage.
I presume this is why...
the main reason is the fear of embarrasment
Hi Peter - Thanks for your post! Yes, we really have to have our students feel that we care about them if we want to reach them. When they feel comfortable and valued they will learn! Best wishes - Susan
students of all ages have problem with answering question do to pier pressure as well don't won't to look follish in front of their classmates or their instructures, but we need to make them more comfortable to always ask any question related to the class and i agree there is no dumb that can be asked, only dumb question is one that is not asked!!!
I agree with this statement many students feel unsure about themselves and if they understood the material so we really need to encourge the students to anwser and no question is dumb.
