Learning is achieved through a self discovery process or thinking process vs. just giving an answer.
Hi Lima, Thanks for sharing a great explanation of the value of questioning skills! Susan

During our childhood we were not afraid to learn through asking many questions to parents, older siblings, and relatives. As we grow up, we have become shy to ask questions. One reason is that we do not want to look stupid or inferior to our peers.
What we really ignore is that questioning is an art. And when you learn to ask the correct questions, that makes you look great in the eyes of your peers while you are learning from them. Becoming self-directed learners through questioning requires that you share the learning experience with the other party. When you can make a person stop and think, you gain his\her respect. Learning through questioning is faster than reading a book. You obtain prompt and direct responses to your questions in a timely efficient way.
I AGREE WITH LLOYD BY USING QUESTIONS YOU CAN DETERMINE THE STUDENT'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE SUBJECT MATTER.
Hi Shirley, You are quite welcome! Susan

Questioning provides the opportunity to incorporate new concepts and ideas into your knowledge without memorizing facts. Thought-provoking questions open the opportunity for creative and critical thinking.
Excellent questioning strategy, Jason! Best wishes - Susan

Sometimes I find students get frustrated in this situation and take on an "I'm not capable of learning this" attitude. To get them past this I'll start by asking them questions I know they have the answer to. Then continue with a few more questions that slowly lead to the solution they were stumped on. This can be a great confidence builder and lead to more a open-minded approach to future subjects.
By asking questions a student will be more comfortable in the classroom and build a rapport with the teacher.
Hi Jennifer, Yes, I agree, whwnever a student can come up with a correct answer they are motivated to try even harder. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

By opening the floor for discussion during your class shows your students that it is necessary to pay close attention to what is being taught to them. It is also a way for your students to know whether or not they are understanding the material. I feel like questions may also help as a positive reinforcement because with my experience as an instructor anytime a student can answer a question correctly it gives them a boost of confidence.
I agree with your statement, students will learn to rely on themselves when it comes to performing research.
I believe that the use of questioning can help students find a greater curiosity in the subject and broaden their interests. By questioning, students are able to apply and develop more learning skills since it requires to research and and perform critical thinking. This will not only benefit students in classroom learning but in their daily lives as well.
I try to ask questions to my students that provoke thought & curiosity. When questions are asked and answered I let them know they are "smart" and to keep up the good work. If asked questions I don't have a (complete) answer for, I often make it into their homework for the day-find the answer and hand it in.
Hi Debra, Yes, learning how to master questioning is very important to the sucess of an instructor. Susan

Questioning is an excellent method of helping students become self-directed learners. An instructor who knows how to pose questions that allow the student to "connect-the-dots" in their knowledge empowers and motivates his/her students.
