I use questions to see where I need to clarify a topic or information
Of times I use questions to see where I need to expand or reduce the information. The students then research or discuss to fill in the learning gaps
Finally I use questions to avoid going over material the student’s already knows.
For fun I ask questions about 'trivia'obscure laws still on the book, history of why we do what we do and such. The students seem to enjoy the ‘useless’ knowledge.
Many times I do see the obsure knowledge as part of a research paper.
Students who are able to form good, cohesive questions are expanding their knowledge base. I encourage my students to formulate questions and exchange them in class, this method helps all levels learn from each other.
Using the Socratic Method in my class, I help the students first, to be more confidence and explore new ways to approach to the problem. Second they learn the process to understand questions and situations and react with understanding. Is a good way to obtain the "self directed" from learners.
The use of questioning can help students to become slf-directed learners by giving them power to participate in discussion. It is the interaction that gives students freedom to control both learning objectives and the means of learning. Through questioning and answering, followed by discussion, creates a diagnosis of one's own learning needs, personal goals, and making decisions.
Hi Cheryl - Thanks for your post to the forum. Definitely questioning usually involves one-on-one interaction between student and instructor. It is often useful though to make it more interactive by bringing other students into the discussion. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Betty - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, encouraging our students to be self directed puts them into an active role in their learning, which is something they will be able to use throughout their lives. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Nevine - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that students need to learn critical thinking skills so that they will be able to analyze situations that they will encounter and be able to apply the concepts that they are learning appropriately. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
usually by trying to think to answer the questions specially indirect ones learn them how to use their brains not to only take ready informations
It will hopefully make them seekers of knowledgeor self motivators through looking up responses for themselves.
By questioning the students you will allow the students to take an individual initiative and to work well with or without others input. It also allows the students an opportunity to be highly motivated and self-directed and comfortable with the overall learning process. It gives the student an chance to be open and very approachable in the classroom setting.
Hi Robert- Thanks for your post to the forum and for sharing some thought provoking questions for our students! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
One can ask each student, "How do you see that this topic is related to your career goal? Will it help you answer questions that your patients or clients may have?"

I always look forward to asking questions to students about what we are going to cover today or after what we went over to either prepare them before and reinstate what we went over. This allows the material to sink longer.
Question requires the student to think about the question and to fomulate an answer.
The questions make the students do some critical thinking on their own, which makes them better learners.
When a student asks me a question, I will ask them a set of questions to get them to the right answer.
Hi Cheryl - Thanks for your very well written post descibing the purposes of each assessment type! Best wishes - Susan
Knowledge type questions assist students in recalling information and facts. Evaluation type questions enable students to judge and evaluate material. Analytical questions enable students to evaluate problems in its component part and to determine interrelationships. Comprehension type questions enable students to translate and rephrase communication or material to check their understanding of what is being communicated. Application type questions enable students to apply the information learned in a different context.
Questioning is a valuable tool to self-direct. Asking a question with a question keeps students alert and engaged. This in turn allows the instructor to guide the learning prcess and stay on topic.
My motto: You can give someone a fish and they will eat today, teach them how to fish and they will never go hungry. Students need to have a WIFM (What's in it for me) Once they find out this out--the world is open for them to learn and self discover.
The use of questions is a effective way to allow students to develop their own interpretation of class objectives. Questions allow students to think differently about various topics. It motivates them to use their own personal experiences to provide answers to relevant questions.
