Humanities and The Kinesthetic Learner

Students who participate in discussions "get it." They arrive with some predisposition towards this dialogue. However, many, many of my kinesthetic learners have no life success in this. They are not amenable to questions, and many avoid, fear, or react to questions with some hostility. I am looking for a "cure."

HI Mike - Thanks for your post to the forum! The challenge is to get your students talking. Get to know their life stories - where have they worked in the past, what are their interests etc. ? Use that info to pull them into classroom discussions. " John, you've worked at Red Lobster, what sort of training do they have for line cooks?" Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career and happy New Year! Susan

Hi Bridget - I absolutely agree - when students participate they become part of the learning process as active learners. It improves retention dramatically! Best wishes - Susan

I like to use discussions in my class and have had great success in doing so. My personal feelings are that a student will remember a lot more from a discussion than a lecture. Especially if they are given positive reinforcement when they do become a part of the discussion.
