Insuring students fully understand content information

I think that atopic that could be added/ or technique if you will is this: When asked a question, I think it is important to restate the question so that you make sure all students hear and understand what is being asked, and after answering the question, restate the question, annswer and ask if that answers the student's question.
I have used the method and it appears to be a good reinforcing tool when used correctly.

Hi Elisha- I agree- that should be the purpose of questioning; it gives the instructor, as well as the student, information about what the student understands and what needs more work. Susan

I am using a new book this quarter that uses "programmed learning" to teach medical terminology. The whole approach to programmed learning is that it uses "frames" or "snapshots" which are isolated pieces of information in the subject matter being taught at the particular moment. The subject is completely broken down, and the student does not advance to the more detailed subject matter until each snapshot is learned. A few questions will be asked to verify this. If the student answers the questions correctly, they are allowed to move forward to the next more detailed lesson. I think the questions we ask are just as important as the subject we are teaching. It is our responsibility to know if the students understand "concept 1" before moving on to "concept 2"

I completely agree! I find that restating the question also ensure that I'm answering exactly what the student wants - and just by rephrasing the question often helps them come up with their own answer...or allows other students to jump in and answer. I definitely agree that double-checking afterward to make sure that I've answered the question is VERY important - and makes the student feel heard.
