Encouraging students to answer.

I think it is very important to understand what you are asking before you ask someone else. You must be ready for the answers thrown back at you therefore your answer is I don't know but I will find out. A question has several angles that could be taken and percieved in many ways can have several right answers it just on which one fits.

Hi Eural - Thanks for sharing an excellent example of effective questioning that encourages critical thinking! Best wishes- Susan

When asked the same question repeatedly, I am presently experimently with disecting the question {when possible} and redirecting the simplistic parts back to the student that asked the question. Hoping to encourage the student to think about the question and perhaps realize that they some times already know the answer.
So far, so good.

HI John - Thanks for your post to the forum. When asked a question that has been asked before I throw it back to the class - "Who knows the answer to this" Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

One problem I face is being asked the same question over and over again. Some times I think I know where the student is going and I don't wait for the student to finish. The other thing I need to realize is that it is not the same question being asked, rather it is another question being asked by a different student.

HI John - Thanks for your post to the forum. It is indeed a delicate damce when we assess our students through face -2-face questioning!
Best wishes for coniniued success in your teaching career. Susan

When I ask students questions I try not to shatter their confidence with questions that are too touhg. Rather, I try to build their confidence through a series of questions.
