asking good questions
When I was still in graduate school I had a friend who had been teaching for quite a while. We were talking about successful teaching methods and he told me the most important thing I could do to get students involved is to ask good questions. This has proven true all throughout my teaching career.

HI Raquel- What may seem to students to be a bad question may indeed be a "great" question for us. "Why does the majority of the class still not get that concept? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Well I was taught that there is no such thing as a bad question. However, I must say that there are some really good questions and those would be the question that gets us thinking and focused on course content.
Debbie,
I truly agree with your point about good questions leading to involved students. Consider that this great technique can be used when students go out in their perspective professional careers. I have group activities that show students the difference between a close ended and open ended question when they do subjective patient assessments. Rather than just asking how are you doing, our student delve into what is the problem, where is this problem; questioning the intensity, character and functional loss associated with this problem.
HI De bbie - Thanks for your post to the forum. You got great advice from a good friend. Of course the key is preparing those good questions in advance. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
