Student Involvment

I try to ask every student in class a question each class period. I find it helps keep them alert, and focused. Although sometimes the answers are not what I was looking for.

Hi Chavelle- This is always a difficult issue. I prefer to talk with the student privately to see if I can see what the problem is. It usually helps to get to know that student as much as possible. if the students feels that you really care about them and their success, you have a better chance of gaining their cooperation. Does anyone have any advice on students who are disrespectful in class and refuse to participate or get involved at all?

Hi James - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, when we get our students involved in lively discussions, it can indeed be very entertaining!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Getting everyone involved in questions and answering in lab activities is important and at times very entertaining.

I total agree. asking each students question makes them feel more apart of the learning proscess. It also helps them feel like they should always pay attention and be focused.

Sometimes thats the hard part, getting them involved. Then they ask questions, and expect me to give them answers. I know I've taught it to them, so I just ask them a question, which makes them think a little, and bam, they figure it out.

Asking students questions each period not only engaging them but also grabs their attention more and make them reflect at a higher level. I also get many answers that are not what I am looking for. This is a good opportunity to restate or build upon part of what they may have stated. Mary
