Getting students involved

What is the best way to get students involved in questioning sessions? Some students seem content to sit by and listen no matter how much encouragement is given.

I use this approach, too. it definitely gets the whoel class involved.

Hi Crystal- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, when we make our students feel comfortable in our classrooms they are more likely to participate. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Tamara you are absoultely right. Asking the same question for a different response is a great idea.

I think that students will be involved with your activity if you as an instructor are involved with them. I mean the more comfortable a student is will make them to participate more with the class. Calling on students is great, but I think that you should give every student to answer on there own before you just call on them.

I think the best way to engage students in question and answer sessions is to go around the room asking students the same question, but to have them answer in their own words. Also to given them praise and reward them for participation.

Hi Brett- Thanks for your post to the forum. Read through the numerous posts on this topic because there are some great ideas offered by other instructors. I like to try to chat with the quiet student informally before class or on break and mention some topic we will be discussing in class. I get his/her knowledge/previous experience on this topic and then deliberately ask them a question in class based on what I KNOW they know. Great for instilling self-confidence!
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
