Getting the students to answer questions
Start with the local news to get them engaged, then contiune onto a lession for that day.
I love this idea, and use it quite often, the problem that I run into is that only one or two students seem to follow current events.
Hi Jennifer - Thanks for your post to the forum. Chocolate chip cookies - hmmmmm??? Always a good idea to be creative and to make learning fun! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I try to relate the material to something the students are exposed to every day. Like today...likening the dental materials to chocolate chip cookies...I mean heck...what doesn't get your attention about a cookie!
Hi Justin - Thanks for sharing a great technique for getting students relaxed and engaged as you start a lesson! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Hi Efelda - Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, when students are interested in a topic it is much easier to get their participation. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I USUALLY PICK A TOPIC THAT CAN INTEREST THEM AND THEN WE CONTINUED DISCUSSING THEM.
Know your students well enough that you can open up the discussion by talking about something that they like or involved in.
Wow- Excellent Justin! Your students relax while discussing things not class related. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Many times I can start class by talking about a sporting event or movie that I just saw. By spending that first five minutes of class to talk about something my students are interested in, I am able to transition right into my lesson plan. This technique has allowed me to get my students more involved in my lectures.
Another technique is to pick a topic that is of interest to your class base even though as a teacher you may have little interest in it. This shows them you are trying to teach but are willing to meet them at their level.
