Know It All Student
How do you handle the student who wants to answer every question?

Usually these students discourage other students from answering questions because this student always seems to answer a few seconds before they can formulate an answer. So, to engage more students in this situation I would ask questions that have multiple answers (requesting one response per student). Afterwards there is more diversity amongst the students who are willing to answer questions.
I try very early to get him to allow the others a oppertunity to answer. If this does not happen the others will not answer, waiting for him to answer incorrectly.
I always acknowledge and thank the student for input, but I let the students know that there are several ways to perform some duties and let them know that the reason we ask questions are to get different ideas on how to do things.
Thank you for your response. This will surely help
Hi Sharon- Thanks for your post to the forum. That is always a difficult situation. The next time that she contradicts you in class, I would say something like "Well, Mary, thanks for your comment. I realize that you are working at XYZ Corp. and they may do things that way but not every facility does. I am trained to teach to more universal standards and that is what you all must learn and be tested on." Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I also have a student who happens to have a job in the field in which she is training. She has definate opinions about what the answers are in regards to lab procedures and lecture points. She comes off to some students as a "know it all". This makes instruction a challenge when she wants to contradict my instruction. What NOW?
Hi Lawrence- This is a dicey situation. I usually will in class say " Ok, John let's see if someone else can come up with the answer" . If needed i will ask "John" privately to give his classmates a chance to answer. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
