Questioning

I believe waiting time to be the most important aspect of questioning. When I first started teaching I would question notice the uncomfortableness and then just answer it. I suppose my question would be, what other tactics have you used to generate more questions using waiting time?

Sometimes when this happens, it makes me think, perhaps my question isn't clear enough, or too much too soon. Usually, this results in backing up a bit, and asking a series of questions which progressively lead the students to the correct response.

Ask the question and then wait a minute and you should get a reply if the question was with the known subject and had been reviewed.

Nathan,

Sometimes with rephrasing the question, I still only receive a few students to chime in. When this happens I then give a example or put the students in a situation and pry a response that way. Some you can reach for one answer but ask a question a variety of ways. In doing so you may reach more students by making them think or look at the question in a dfferent light.

Hi Nathan, Thanks for your post to the forum. iI think the best tactic is to rephrase the question. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
