You are very right Erin. I find that sometimes our students complain because their peers at non-career schools say that their instructors do not have so many expectations. However, we have so many alumni who return to thank us because they are well employed and their friends are still looking for jobs!

I couldn't agree more. We as instructors are obliged to inform our students of the "real" world for their new chosen field. We would do a tremendous disservice to our students if we let them skate the system just to finish the curriculum. I'm a firm believer of informing the students of the expectations and requirements of them. Eye openers to the insight of their "new" career can make and break their success.

Hi Bronna-
Are you referring to the coping strategies I just emailed? If so, we incorporate teaching coping strategies into Freshman Seminar classes along with time mgmt etc.

I like this idea and can see that it would be of benefit to the students. Do you have student resistance? How do you handle it?

A very good idea, Denise! It's always so difficult to evaluate groupwork and your method must be a very good tool. I'll pass it on!

I do something similar with my class. I tell them that I am their instructor to gave them the information and tools begin and be successful in their careers. Once they start their group projects I hand them timesheets to keep track of their involvement and time like they are on the job and now I am their Boss. They have to turn in the timesheet at the end of the week which helps me know who did what and how much time it took them for their evaluation once the project is completed.

You are a very wise instructor! We are charged with preparing our students for the world of work and you certainly do that. I am not at all surprised that you have,in the end, been thanked by your past students.
