TESTS
CANT UNDERSTAND WHY SOME STUDENTS WANT TO CHEAT THEMSELVES BY CHEATING ON TESTS.
Hi Kimberly, Thanks for your post to the forum. One of my most poignant memories is of a student who was 58 years old and whose husband had died exactly one year before. I saw her at orientation for her Medical Coding program and noticed that she seemed to be in tears. I pulled her aside and asked what was wrong. She told me that she was so frightened of being a student at her age but that her husband had encouraged her to get her certificate before he died and so here she was. Over the next few months I kept in contact with her and her instructors. At graduation she earned honors and had a new self confidence that was astounding! This is really why we do what we do! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

Most of my students are adults and majority of them have not been in school in quite awhile. They are scared as they are not sure what to expect of college classes, and they second guess themselves. I tryi to encourage them that they do know it and they can get a good grade just trust in themselves and apply what they read and learned thus far.
Usually this student is not interested in the class in general or the topic has not been clearly defined. Could be instructor issue or the students... who knows.
I teach courses that are at the end of some student time at school. Some are just looking for an easy way to pass the course and graduate. Trying to cheat is the easy way out if they don't get caught.
Students rationalize cheating because it is a way to obtain certification to get a job. They don't care what it takes. This relates to the ethical section in this module. We need to teach them the difference between right and wrong as well as the content of oour courses.
We run a school for adults, who for one most are good students but a few bad apples spoil it for everybody, the cheaters probably have done this their whole life they will not change. The need ethics. You can't buy ethics.
Maybe it reflecks the parents.
Alot of students before a test can know the material real well but when it comes time to take the test they freeze up and get real nervous. Some students just can't take tests, these students have to find a way to relax and stay focused on what they learned...others can't so they go the easy way and try cheating.

Here is a pretty comprehensive listing of reasons why students cheat and the corresponding research.

I agree Victor; often pressure/fear of failure drives students to cheat. I have been amazed at the effort students will put in to cheat (notes in microscopic handwritten text up their sleeve for example) when spending the equivalent time studying would have enabled them to pass the test!
I think students who cheat on test may feel under preasure and can be a result of a need in understanding priorities.
Lazy is exactly what I am experiencing. We just had a "generation Y" training and it opened my eyes to alot.
The only reason I can figure is that they are lazy and dont care about the subject matter at hand.
