Classroom Assessment Techniques
I like the idea of classroom assessment techniques and the examples on the web link. Is there anyone out there that may have more examples they could share?
I am glad there is a name to this process. One CAT I use is relay problem solving. Depending on the size of the class, I separate the class into teams. Give a math problem that each person must take part in solving. Just like in relay racing the anchor must make sure the problem is correct to win.
I use CAT when I see the glaze of the eyes of the students and I want to assess where they are getting stuck or to show them they are comprehending the subject.
Hi George- that is indeed the beauty of Minute Papers. When they know their identity will not be revealed, students often are much more open and unafraid to ask questions.
I think the Minute Paper is a very good technique because you see the knowledge they have now and a question can be asked w/o others knonwing who wrote it and allows better communication between instrutor and student.
What the MINUTE PAPER is- Students are asked to take a half sheet of paper and summarize the most important thing they learned in that class period and also to list one unanswered question they might have. They can also be asked what was the most interesting thing they learned in class.
I like the idea of setting up teams before the lesson is presented.
I've had good results assigning topics to groups of 4 or 5 students in a team before the lesson is presented. Rules; there are no wrong answers. This allows teams to brainstorm to come up with their best answer based on their experiences and current knowledge. After the lesson ask the questions to the whole class and watch the confidence grow. This is a good confidence builder for a new instructor as well.
it is the best to fall back on when you have instuctors block
