Best tools you've found for assessment
What are some of the best tools you have found for classroom assessment of your students?
Role playing and simulations--I agree!
In my ESL class, role play is one of my best tools,as performance is the ultimate goal. When students act out real language situations they show their skills and give you the scope of what needs to be improved.open class discussions, and problem solving situations may contribute to assessment on a daily basis as well.
I use weekly hands- on assignments as I feel they show whether the material is understood. Also, using short 5 question quiz at intervals during course of quarter helps me find those students who do not fully grasp the materials and may need more individual attention in class. I intend for the students to progress by building on information at weekly pace. It is my habit to review what I covered in preceding week before I continue with new focus for the week. It helps because any students who missed points to be covered can ask for clarification, therefor I know where they stand.
I have found a daily quiz to be highly beneficial for both the students and myself. It is usually quite short and most everyone is done within 10 minutes. It lets me see where everyone is at, and gives the students practice. At the beginning of the course the quiz results may be low, but pretty quickly the students find it great for instilling vital information about there trade. I also average them or sometimes even drop the lowest grade.
